with some politics, i'm struck when you talk about republicans as they. i know you insist despite voting for president obama twice now that you're still a republican. but as i go through your record on some social issues and even foreign policy issues i challenge to you say on what basis are you still a republican? do you feel like this republican party has left you or have you left it? >> i think the republican party right now is having an identity problem. and i'm still a republican. i'm a republican who grew up along with george bush xli. i grew up with ronald reagan, cap weinberger, frank carlucci that republican party, the problemen party of dick lugar and john tower. but in recent years, there's been a significant shift to the right and we have seen what that shift has produced, two losing presidential campaigns. i think what the republican party needs to do now is take a very hard look at itself and understand that the country is changed. the country is changing demo graphically. if the republican party does not change along with that demographic, they are going to be in trouble.

. president obama spent the better part of the hour talking about the debt ceiling. so we'll go into the details about what it is, exactly. it is a cap on the amount of money the federal government may borrow. the cap is actually set by congress. so it includes money the federal government borrows from the public. for example, u.s. bonds, right? also includes debt that the treasury owes the government, trust funds like social security and medicare. right now, the ceiling, is it set at almost $16.4 trillion. the country's borrowing already hit that mark. that happened on december 31st. so the ceiling is raised periodically because both parties, they have to have approved the tax cuts and the spending increases over the years, knowing that they're going to add to the deficits. by doing so, they increase the country's need to borrow in the future. since 1962, congress has raised the debt limit 76 times, 11 times in the past decade. i want to talk about the debate over the debt ceiling, how it affects the overall economy. our georgia tech economics professor, danny boston joining us

, and the second term options for president obama, or is there no talk about that today? >> today, not so much. but the whole weekend we've been hearing talk about this. congress has decided to ease up a bit, give a three-month extension so we can lift that debt ceiling for the next three months. that will back us into, by the way, the whole idea of sequestration and dealing with the debt crisis on a more firm note in about three months. so they're giving the president, they're giving everyone a little bit of time right now to work it through. i'm sure the president is grateful for that. but for right now, vice president biden, of course, has just taken his oath of office which is very important not only because it's nice to know the vice president's all lined up. but remember, joe biden becomes a very important person to look at over the next four years because there's talk of him running for the presidency four years from now. a lot of that will depend on what hillary clinton does. she's sort of the gorilla in the room right now. but substantively right now, there's not too much going on, on

? he's also talking about obama is not a king. well, if he's not a king, then you could nullify him. if he is a king, trying to be a king, then you can't nullify what a king is trying to do. what the previous gop name was trying to be a king. you can't have it both ways, one day say he's not leading us and the next day he's trying to be a king. what he put forward is very reasonable. he's not trying to take away everyone's guns. he's not trampling the second amendment. he's doing something very responsible that allows law-abiding, responsible gun owners to have their guns and protect themselves in their homes and create more safety for america. and he's done something that isn't worried about the political wins. he's doing what he thinks is right, what is the best policy. and i'm actually proud to see him stand up for what he thinks is the best policy and say we're not going to do the assault weapons ban. push them as far as you can. you know, the pro-gun right is lost to the democrats. so don't worry about them. we can still win elections without them. >> well, david, five states w

day of service . let's talk more about the inauguration and the second term for president obama. for that i want to bring in my colleague, white house correspondent dan lothian. dan, let's talk about priorities for the president's second term but first it's an interesting little nugget of history. this is a historic day and also a historic inauguration for president obama because he's going to match only fdr in getting two double swear-ins or four swearing-ins if you will. why is that? >> first of all, look back to 2009 when justice roberts and the president kind of stepped on each other, the word "faithfully" out of order, there was a question whether or not it was legitimate so, they had a second one in the private quarters of the white house. this time around the constitution says you have to administer the oath before noon on the 20th. on sunday is not typically when we have the inauguration, so they'll have a private ceremony in the blue room on sunday and then on monday they'll have the official sort of public swearing-in for the president. >> and the parade and pomp and c
